Bridging the gaps for diversity and inclusion

Nijijiro Diversity attempts to bridge the gaps facing the LGBT community within society. We hope to gift future generations a better society for all, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity.

Who We Are

‘Nijiiro’ means rainbow in Japanese. Since the establishment of Nijiiro Diversity in 2013, the organization has been encouraging diversity, inclusion, and individual agency. We are the first non-profit organization in Japan to tackle issues such as LGBTQ+ discrimination in the workplace. We promote social change by hosting Pride Center Osaka, giving informational lectures, performing rigorous research, and consulting public and private organizations.

The founder and director of Nijiiro Diversity, MURAKI Maki, is openly lesbian and one of the most renowned LGBTQ+ activists in Japan.

What We Do

Nijiiro Diversity defends human rights and the dignity of LGBTQ+ people, their families and allies. We invest in research and development toward a more equitable and rewarding society where no one is left behind. We focus on inspiring change within companies, governments, and the law.

LGBTQ+ Community Within
Japanese Society Today

LGBTQ+ people in Japan are experiencing economic, political, cultural, and psychological pressure due to the lack of legal equality.

  • Same-sex marriage is still not legalized, with lawsuits for same-sex marriage ongoing since 2019.
  • LGBTQ+ people experience more discriminative behaviors and are 2-3 times more likely to have depression.
  • There is no comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation.
  • Only 40% of major corporations have some kinds of anti-discrimination policies.
  • Many municipal governments have established a same-sex partnership system, yet LGBTQ+ people still experience undue hardship to adopt children, update their family registry, perform a legal name change, secure loans, and be recognized as an equal partner in many other civil situations.
  • More than half of Japanese people do not oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage. However, conservative norms and traditions are hindering the adoption of proposed measures.

Support LGBTQ+ Rights in Japan

Nijiiro Diversity always welcomes domestic and overseas support. Our operation is vital in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and quality of life in Japan. Social movements in Japan also have a positive impact on Asia as a whole. Japan is relatively a wealthy and stable country; however, with a lack of government support, coupled with an underdeveloped philanthropy culture, small NGOs like us are hard-pressed to stay afloat. With fewer than 10 full-time staff, we appreciate any support you can give.

Here are some ways you can directly further the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Japan:

  • Set up a recurring donation using a credit or debit card. We also accept PayPal.
  • Sponsor an upcoming community event
  • Invest in infrastructure, such as our offices and the permanent LGBTQ+ community center, by donating unrestricted funds
  • Nominate us for grants or employee matching programs at your organization

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions concerning donations. If you wish to register for the tax incentive available to Japanese companies and citizens, please inform us via email at donate@nijiirodiversity.jp.

DONATE

We are also accepting donations through donation platforms such as GlobalGiving and Benevity.
